Presentation on dam removal in Albion, Friday, Sept. 22

Everyone is invited to a presentation and Q&A by Matt Diana (DNR), Dan Peabody (EGLE) and Suzannah Deneau (Wightman- consulting firm) on dam removal projects in Albion, Friday Sept 22, 2:15-3:15 pm in Norris Hall 101. There are five dams on the Kalamazoo River in the city of Albion and all of them are being considered for removal.  Earlier this year the city received a $1 million grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) for removal design of the Albion dams. Sponsored by the Albion College Center for Sustainability and the Environment and the Earth & Environment department. Open to the public.

Get yourself a bag of books for $1

Phase Two of the Friends of the Albion District Library/AAUW annual book sale is now underway. This week only, during regular library hours, a bag of books is only a dollar! We still have thousands of books to choose from, so come on downtown to your public library (501 S. Superior St) and browse an interesting and eclectic selection of used books, upstairs in the Naomi Lane room. Library hours are Monday and Wednesday 9-5, Tuesday and Thursday 9-8, and Saturday 10-5 (closed Fridays and Sundays). Bring your friends, your own enormous bag (or use one of our regular-sized bags), and an actual dollar (sorry, cash only). Used books make great gifts!

Call for courses that engage the Albion community

Hello all! Just sending a gentle reminder that there is still time to submit your course to be a part of the Community Engaged Learning catalog! I am looking to document the courses that offer learning opportunities that directly engage the Albion community. Examples of this type of work include, but are not limited to: volunteering and service projects, civic engagement projects, visiting historical artifacts, community research projects, etc. If you offer a course that may fit this scope, please answer this Google Form to provide more information for the catalog. All courses will need to be submitted by October 20th at the latest.

Start your week with a spiritual practice

Laura Todd, assistant director for spiritual wellness, will offer spiritual practices every Monday in September from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of the Kellogg Center. Spiritual practices can help you remember what’s important, re-center in times of stress and explore the bigger picture. A different practice will be featured each week. Whether you’re new to spiritual practice, looking to deepen your practice or just want to chat, you are welcome to stop by!

Join us today for a dialogue on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging

The Human Rights Lab is hosting a dialogue on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) on Sept. 14, 7-9 p.m. in the Science Atrium. We will discuss DEIB at Albion, build networks, and gain a better understanding of existing resources. Come and share your concerns as well as hopes and ideas. Together we can make Albion a more inclusive and equitable place!

Islam 101 – questions and prayer demo with Imam Sohail Chaudhry

Imam Sohail Chaudhry will give a short talk and q & a about Islam basics on Wednesday, September 20th at 6:30 PM in the Umbrella House, followed by a prayer demonstration at 8:00 PM. Topics covered include what Islam is about and how it is practiced, the role of Jesus and prophets in the faith, balancing Islamic practice with college life, and more.

People of all beliefs are welcome to attend both parts of the event and ask questions! Imam Sohail is the Resident Imam (prayer leader) of the Islamic Society of Greater Lansing and is experienced in interfaith discussion. The talk and prayer demo will take place on the downstairs level of Umbrella.
