The Anna Howard Shaw Lecture will feature Dr. Berkley Browne, ’00, at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 23, in Norris 101. The lecture is named for Albion alumna, the Rev. Dr. Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919). Albion College honors this suffrage leader, orator, medical doctor and ordained Methodist minister with an annual lecture that addresses current women’s, gender and sexuality scholarship and activism.
Browne is an assistant professor in the Department of Foundational Medical Studies at Oakland University’s William Beaumont School of Medicine. In addition to overseeing career development, academic success and student wellness and well-being programs, Browne serves as an adviser for medical students.
Browne’s topic for the Anna Howard Shaw Lecture is Evidence-B(i)ased Care: How Well Does Contemporary Medical Education Address Race and Gender-Based Health Disparities and Where Do We Go from Here? She will address how medical education teaches about health disparities and how that tends to reinforce stereotypes and blindspots and can stymie health-related research.
