Islam 101: questions and prayer demo tonight

Imam Sohail Chaudhry will give a short talk and q & a about Islam basics this evening (Wednesday, September 20th) at 6:30 PM in the Umbrella House, followed by a prayer demonstration at 8:00 PM. Topics covered include what Islam is about and how it is practiced, the role of Jesus and prophets in the faith, balancing Islamic practice with college life, and more.

People of all beliefs are welcome to attend both parts of the event and ask questions! Imam Sohail is the Resident Imam (prayer leader) of the Islamic Society of Greater Lansing and is experienced in interfaith discussion. The talk and prayer demo will take place on the downstairs level of Umbrella.

Auditions for zombie apocalypse play

The Theatre Department will hold auditions for “2AZ” by Michael Brian Ogden on Monday, Sept. 25. Sign up for an audition slot on the “Theatre Production” Course Webs page. To access page: Login to Course Webs. Click the arrow tab in the upper right corner under your profile pic. Under “Student Resources” you will see a drama mask icon with “Theatre Production”. Click the icon to join.

About the show: “2AZ” is an action/horror story that follows a group of survivors dwelling in the wilderness during the years following societal collapse as a result of a zombie pandemic. In addition to the featured speaking roles, we will also cast actors to portray zombies and soldiers, which will involve significant fight choreography. We are particularly interested in seeing actors with experience and/or affinity for zombie movement and stage combat.

Rehearses M-F, 6-10pm, beginning October 2.

Performances: November 9-18.

Beyond Albion is today

Beyond Albion is Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 4-6 p.m. in Upper Baldwin. The event merges the Gerstacker Institute Recruitment Night, the Ford Institute Service Organization and Grad School Fair, and the Domestic Off-Campus Program Fair. This annual fall event is for students seeking full-time employment, internships, after-graduation service projects, information on graduate/professional programs, and domestic off-campus studies. Get yourself a bag of books for $1

Phase Two of the Friends of the Albion District Library/AAUW annual book sale is now underway. This week only, during regular library hours, a bag of books is only a dollar! We still have thousands of books to choose from, so come on downtown to your public library (501 S. Superior St) and browse an interesting and eclectic selection of used books, upstairs in the Naomi Lane room. Library hours are Monday and Wednesday 9-5, Tuesday and Thursday 9-8, and Saturday 10-5 (closed Fridays and Sundays). Bring your friends, your own enormous bag (or use one of our regular-sized bags), and an actual dollar (sorry, cash only). Used books make great gifts!

Presentation on dam removal in Albion, Friday, Sept. 22

Everyone is invited to a presentation and Q&A by Matt Diana (DNR), Dan Peabody (EGLE) and Suzannah Deneau (Wightman- consulting firm) on dam removal projects in Albion, Friday Sept 22, 2:15-3:15 pm in Norris Hall 101. There are five dams on the Kalamazoo River in the city of Albion and all of them are being considered for removal.  Earlier this year the city received a $1 million grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) for removal design of the Albion dams. Sponsored by the Albion College Center for Sustainability and the Environment and the Earth & Environment department. Open to the public.

La Fiesta De Independencia / Dance Workshop Sept. 21

If you always wanted to learn how to Bachata, Cumbia, or Salsa, you can come break it down with OLA at the La Fiesta De Independencia/Dance Workshop Thursday, Sept. 21 from 7-9:30 p.m. in the KC Stack. Formerly known as Salsa Night, OLA provides the campus with cultural events that tie to Hispanic/Latinx backgrounds. Wear something nice, grab a Jarrito and enjoy the Latin flare.  Co-Sponsored with Union Board and the Office of Campus Life.
