The campus community is invited to the History Department’s annual Coy James Memorial Lecture, Wednesday, Oct. 4, 4:30 pm, Bobbitt Auditorium. This year’s invited speaker is Dr. Ian Shin, assistant professor of history and American culture at the University of Michigan. Dr. Shin will speak on “Collecting Empire: Chinese Art and U.S. Imperial Stewardship in the Early 20th Century.” In the early 20th century, Americans grew more curious about and connected to the world, while simultaneously dominating vast expanses of the globe in Asia, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean. Dr. Shin will examine why and how Americans collected Chinese art and antiquities to theorize ‘stewardship’ as a mode of U.S. empire – not only over China, but also over other parts of the world. The lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
