Who Gets to Vote? Free pizza and workshop on the history of voting rights, Tuesday October 8, 5:30-7:00pm

First time voting in November? Lovers of democracy everywhere congratulate and thank you! First-timers and old-timers, if you want to learn a little more about this precious right, join the History department at 5:30 pm in the library’s Mudd Learning Center on Tuesday, October 8th, for a workshop on the history of voting rights. Freedom isn’t free, but the pizza is. Open to the public; everyone is welcome.

Spend a semester in Philadelphia or Chicago and gain valuable internship experience!

The Philadelphia Center and Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture Campus Representative, Moss Ely, will be on campus Thursday, September 26, 2024, visiting some classrooms, meeting students, and holding a lunch hour information session from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the Career and Internship Center-Ferguson Hall, 3rd floor. Pizza and beverages will be provided. Moss will also be attending Beyond Albion on Wednesday, September 25 from 4- 6 pm in the Science Atrium.

The Philadelphia and Chicago Center equips college students and other participants to learn from diverse urban communities through innovative programs, seminars, and internships.

The Albion College Domestic Off-Campus Program Application (Brits Abroad) deadline for spring 2025 is Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

If you are unable to attend the info session, please contact Dawn Hernandez at dhernandez@albion.edu to schedule an individual appointment with Moss.

Beyond Albion is a Career, Graduate School, Service Organization, and Domestic Study Away Fair and will be held Wednesday, September 25 from 4-6 pm in the Science Atrium.

Held each fall, this event is for students seeking full-time employment, internships, after-graduation service projects, information on graduate/professional programs, and those interested in domestic off-campus study.

For those seeking a job or internship, present yourself professionally by wearing business casual or professional attire and bring numerous copies of your resume printed on resume paper. Get your resume reviewed and visit the Career Closet for FREE professional attire at the Career and Internship Center in Ferguson on the 3rd floor.

There will be a photo backdrop at Beyond Albion. Have a friend take your photo with your phone and use the photo for your LinkedIn profile!

Outdoor Warning System Test & Maintenance – Thursday, September 26th

Campus Safety will be performing maintenance and testing of the outdoor warning siren on Thursday, September 26th, at 12:00 PM.  This is estimated to take up to 30 minutes.  In an effort to minimize disruption to the campus community, the alarm should not sound for more than 30 seconds at a time.

Additional notifications will be sent via text and email through BlackBoard.  A follow-up email will be sent to the campus community once the maintenance and testing is complete.

Voting Rights in the U.S. topic of History’s 2024 Coy James Lecture, Wednesday October 16th, 4:30 pm

Save the date! Dr. Liette Gidlow, professor of history at Wayne State University, will speak on “Voting Rights in the U.S. from New Nation to Now”, on Wednesday, October 16th, at 4:30 pm in Bobbitt Auditorium. Dr. Gidlow, a scholar of voting rights, woman suffrage, and Black electoral politics, is the author of The Big Vote: Gender, Consumer Culture, and the Politics of Exclusion, 1890s – 1920s, and the editor of Obama, Clinton, Palin: Making History in Election 2008. And while you’re saving the date, take a minute to be sure you have a plan to vote in this election. Remember, if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu!

Walktober – Walking Challenge

Walktober is a month-long walking challenge.  During the month of October you will keep track of your daily steps, then send them via email to our office.  The OIW will send out updates after the steps are sent to us.   Please use this form to sign up.  More details will be emailed out to participants this week.   We will have prizes for the top 4 teams.   The sign up form will close 9/29.

Making Ethical Decisions in a Messy World’ Workshop This Evening

<p dir=”ltr”>This interactive workshop will give you tools to act in the tough ethical situations that come up in modern adult life. Topics include clarifying values, advocating when your power is limited, and navigating ethical differences. Snacks will be provided!</p>
