Gildart Writing Contest for Sophomores

The Gildart Writing Prizes honor Robert H. Gildart, professor of creative writing at Albion College for 25 years. Cash awards of $100, $250, or $500 are awarded to sophomores in the categories of poetry, fiction, and drama. Sophomore students may submit more than one work but total submissions for each category should not exceed 15 pages (25 pages for drama). Each entry should have a title page that says “Gildart 2024” which includes your name, student number, and KC box number. Entries selected for a prize will be notified in April. Submit entries to the English Department’s main office (Vulgamore 406) or Mary Morrow (mmorrow@albion.edu) no later than Monday, March 11 at noon.

Overlapping Histories of American Cities and American Foreign Relations, Monday at 4:15

American Cities and the World: Global Histories in Unexpected Places is the topic of a talk by Andrew Klein, Monday, Feb. 5, 4:15 p.m. in Robinson 203. Klein is a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is a candidate for assistant professor of history at Albion College. Please join the History department to hear how local struggles for freedom and democracy in American cities in the 19th and 20th centuries contributed to the globalization of the United States. This event is free and open to the public.

Catholic Women and Feminism from the 1950s through the 1980s, Friday at 4:15

Beyond Birth Control: Catholic Women, Childbirth, and Early Motherhood, 1950-1990 is the topic of a talk by Dr. Emily Smith, Friday, Feb. 2, 4:15 p.m., in Robinson 203. Dr. Smith, currently a visiting assistant professor of Religion at Wabash College, is a candidate for assistant professor of history at Albion College. Please join the History department for an engaging lecture on Catholic women and feminist thought. This event is free and open to the public.

Sigma Chi Bowling Tournament Fundraiser

Join the brothers of Sigma Chi Saturday, Feb. 17, 7 p.m. at University Lanes for a fundraiser bowling tournament. The tournament is a doubles scotch style, with a cost of 60 dollars for the two (30 a person). Three games are guaranteed, with a tournament bracket for those who advance. Cash prizes will be given to winners, as well as 50/50 raffles. All proceeds will go to The Huntsmen Cancer Foundation. Visit @sigmachi_albion on instagram for full details. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) – Free Income Tax Preparation

We have appointment times for this tax season. Call Renee Harlow, at 517-629-0419 to schedule an appointment. Appointment times are Wednesdays, at 3:15 and 4:30 p.m. and Fridays, at 12 and 1:15 p.m. in Robinson Hall, Room 106, Gerstacker Computer Lab.

Student volunteers will prepare and e-file Federal and Michigan tax returns for students, faculty and staff (who make $60,000 or less). They can also prepare Albion tax returns for mailing. This free service is also open to the greater Albion community. The Albion College Accounting Society is sponsoring this program under Professors Leah Parker-Roth, and Dr. O’Brien. Students have completed and passed an IRS testing/training program called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
